President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe (Establishment) Bill 2025 into law, officially creating a new federal university in Lagos State.
The announcement was made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary on Thursday, November 6.
Akpabio said the Senate had earlier transmitted authenticated copies of the bill to the President, who returned two certified copies bearing his signature, signifying the law’s assent.
“It is my honour to announce that the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe Establishment Bill 2025 has been assented to by Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Akpabio said.
He described the development as a milestone for education in Lagos State, affirming that the institution “has come to stay.”
The Senate President also congratulated the people of Epe and Lagos State on the establishment of the university, commending the President for what he described as a continued effort to expand access to higher education nationwide.

He added that the approval demonstrates the administration’s commitment to science, technology, and innovation-driven development.
The bill, sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and seconded by Deputy Majority Leader Oyelola Ashiru, seeks to promote research and specialized training in science and technology fields, while strengthening Nigeria’s capacity in applied sciences and innovation.
Nigeria currently has 72 federal universities, 42 federal polytechnics, and 28 federal colleges of education, alongside numerous state and private tertiary institutions.
The creation of the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe, comes just months after the Federal Executive Council placed a seven-year moratorium on establishing new federal tertiary institutions, citing overstretched resources and the need to strengthen existing schools.
Despite the policy, the university’s establishment has now been formalized through legislative approval and presidential assent, adding another specialized institution to Nigeria’s growing list of federal universities.
