A prominent member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin, has officially dumped the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, and joined the All Progressives Congress, APC, declaring his total support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration’s policies aimed at repositioning Nigeria for sustainable growth and national unity.
The announcement, which ended weeks of speculation about Jibrin’s political future, was made on Saturday in Kano, where the lawmaker addressed journalists and party supporters. He explained that his decision was motivated by a desire to align with a political structure that, in his words, “has demonstrated genuine commitment to governance, stability, and national development.”
Jibrin’s defection marks a return to the APC, the party under which he previously served as a federal lawmaker and played a key role in national campaigns. He left the APC in 2022 to join the NNPP, where he became one of the party’s most prominent figures and a close ally of former Kano State Governor, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
However, insiders say relations between Jibrin and the NNPP leadership grew strained in recent months due to ideological differences and disagreements over the party’s direction, particularly its performance in the 2023 general elections and subsequent internal conflicts in Kano State.

Speaking during his declaration, Jibrin stated: “After deep reflection and consultations with my constituents, political associates, and family, I have decided to return to the All Progressives Congress. The APC remains the most credible platform for progressive governance in Nigeria, and I am ready to contribute my quota to the success of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.”
In his speech, Jibrin expressed strong support for President Tinubu’s leadership, saying that the President’s economic reforms, foreign policy initiatives, and efforts to stabilize the nation’s currency and security situation were steps in the right direction.
“President Tinubu has shown courage and clarity in implementing tough but necessary reforms. He is confronting challenges that have been ignored for too long. As patriots, our duty is to support his administration and help ensure the success of his policies,” he said.
He added that his decision to join the APC was not about personal ambition but about contributing to the nation’s development through an environment that values ideas, innovation, and inclusivity.
Jibrin’s return was warmly received by APC leaders at both the state and national levels. The APC Chairman in Kano State, Abdullahi Abbas, described the development as “a homecoming of a loyal son and a respected political strategist.”
Abbas said: “Hon. Jibrin’s return to the APC is a big plus for our great party. He is an experienced lawmaker and an influential figure whose return will further strengthen our grassroots mobilization and strategic planning.”
He assured Jibrin of full integration into the party structure and noted that his experience would be crucial in helping the APC consolidate its gains in Kano and beyond.
At the national level, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, also welcomed Jibrin’s defection, calling it “an affirmation of the growing confidence Nigerians has in the APC-led administration.”
Morka said:
“Rep. Jibrin’s decision to return to the APC demonstrates that our message of national renewal is resonating across the country. We are delighted to have him back, and we look forward to working together for the progress of our nation.”
The NNPP, on its part, expressed disappointment over Jibrin’s exit but maintained that the party remained focused on rebuilding its internal structures and strengthening its position ahead of future elections.
A statement by the NNPP National Secretary, Dipo Olayoku, said: “While we respect Hon. Jibrin’s personal decision, we are disappointed that he has chosen to abandon the collective vision of the NNPP at a time when our country needs alternative voices. Nevertheless, we wish him well in his new political journey.”
Sources within the NNPP also revealed that Jibrin’s departure did not come as a surprise, as there had been growing tension between his camp and some state leaders over control of party structures.
Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin, who represents Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency of Kano State, is known for his outspoken nature and reformist approach to legislative work.
He first came into national prominence during the 8th National Assembly, where he served as the Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations before later clashing with then-Speaker Yakubu Dogara over allegations of budget padding—a controversy that led to his temporary suspension.
Despite political turbulence, Jibrin has maintained a strong political following in Kano and remains respected for his organizational skills and commitment to youth empowerment.
When he joined the NNPP in 2022, he was instrumental in building the party’s structure in Kano, helping to mobilize support that contributed to the NNPP’s strong showing in the 2023 elections, particularly the governorship victory of Abba Kabir Yusuf.
However, his fallout with the NNPP leadership reportedly began after disagreements over appointments, internal control, and the handling of key political positions post-election.
