Senator Ned Nwoko has debunked long-standing claims that he married popular Nollywood actress Regina Daniels when she was just 17 years old.

In a statement released on Thursday, Nwoko clarified that at the time they met, Regina informed him she was 21 years old, a claim she backed with official documentation. According to him, she presented her voter’s card, issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission which showed her date of birth as October 10, 1998.

The senator explained that he has kept the voter’s card since their first meeting and decided to make it public to end years of misinformation about their relationship.

“I have had this document since the day I met Regina. Her INEC voter’s card clearly shows her age, and I’m releasing it now to dispel the falsehood that I married a minor,” Nwoko said.

He further referenced a BBC interview with Regina’s mother, Rita Daniels, which, according to him, also confirmed the actress’s true age.

Nwoko stated that their marriage, which took place six years ago, was legally and traditionally conducted, noting that Regina is 27 years old today.

“The rumours that I married an underage girl are completely untrue and misleading. Our marriage followed all due processes under Nigerian law and our cultural traditions,” he said.

The lawmaker, who represents Delta North Senatorial District, urged the public to be cautious about spreading unverified information, especially on social media.

He described the persistent rumours as a campaign of misinformation designed to tarnish his image and distract from his work in public service.

“People must stop repeating lies without evidence. The truth is clear, and the facts have always been available,” Nwoko added.

Meanwhile, online commentators have continued to debate the issue, with some expressing skepticism despite the senator’s evidence, while others commended him for finally addressing the matter directly.
