Nigeria forward, Victor Osimhen scored twice as the Super Eagles sealed an emphatic 4-1 victory over the Panthers of Gabon in extra time to advance to the final round of the 2026 World Cup playoffs on Thursday at Stade Mohammed V in Rabat, Morocco.

The win not only reignited Nigeria’s World Cup hopes but also showcased the team’s resilience, tactical discipline, and attacking flair under pressure.

The stakes couldn’t have been higher. Nigeria, having finished second in their qualifying group behind South Africa, were forced into the playoff route to keep their World Cup dreams alive. Gabon, on the other hand, had cruised through their group and were eager to make history by qualifying for their first-ever World Cup.

From the opening whistle, Nigeria asserted dominance in possession and territory. The midfield trio of Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, and Frank Onyeka dictated the tempo, while the attacking trident of Victor Osimhen, Chidera Ejuke, and Akor Adams constantly probed Gabon’s backline.

Despite their early control, the Super Eagles struggled to convert chances. A controversial moment came in the first half when Bright Osayi-Samuel appeared to tug a Gabonese attacker’s shirt inside the box. After a lengthy VAR review, the referee opted not to award a penalty, much to the relief of Nigerian fans.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 78th minute. A defensive mix-up in Gabon’s box allowed Akor Adams to pounce on a loose ball and slot it into an empty net, giving Nigeria a deserved 1-0 lead.

However, the joy was short-lived. In the 89th minute, Gabon’s Mario Lemina unleashed a speculative shot from outside the box. The ball took a wicked deflection off a Nigerian defender and wrong-footed goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, nestling into the net to level the score at 1-1.

With the match tied at full time, the game headed into extra time, and that’s when Nigeria truly came alive.

Just seven minutes into extra time, Nigeria regained the lead. Wilfred Ndidi, who had been immense in midfield, threaded a perfectly weighted pass to Chidera Ejuke. The winger showed composure and class, slotting the ball past the Gabonese keeper to make it 2-1.

The goal sparked a surge of confidence in the Super Eagles. In the 102nd minute, Victor Osimhen—who had been relatively quiet—announced his presence with a stunning finish from a tight angle, extending Nigeria’s lead to 3-1. His celebration, which involved removing his shirt, earned him a yellow card but ignited the Nigerian bench and fans.

Osimhen wasn’t done. In the 110th minute, he latched onto a through ball from Iwobi, shrugged off a defender, and calmly slotted home his second of the night, sealing a 4-1 victory and sending Nigeria into the final of the CAF playoff mini tournament.

Coach José Peseiro’s tactical setup was spot-on. His decision to start Akor Adams paid dividends, while his substitutions—particularly the introduction of Ejuke—proved decisive. The midfield trio provided balance, and the defense, marshaled by Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi, held firm despite Gabon’s late first-half pressure.

With this victory, Nigeria advances to the final of the CAF playoff mini tournament. They will face the winner of the other semifinal between DR Congo and Cameroon. The winner of that final will earn a spot in the six-team inter-confederation playoff, where two more World Cup slots are up for grabs.

The road to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico remains challenging, but this performance has reignited belief among Nigerian fans and players alike.

Speaking after the match, Osimhen said, “We knew what was at stake. We had to dig deep, and I’m proud of the team. This is for every Nigerian who believed in us.”
