The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has officially settled on Ibadan, Oyo State, as the venue for its upcoming elective national convention, according to Adamawa State Governor and Chairman of the Convention Planning Committee, Ahmadu Fintiri.

Speaking briefly with journalists on Thursday night, Fintiri confirmed that party leaders had concluded deliberations and unanimously agreed that the convention would proceed as scheduled in the Oyo State capital.

The announcement came after a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja’s Asokoro district.

The gathering brought together some of the PDP’s most prominent figures, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, the PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, and former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Tanimu Turaki.

Their presence signaled the seriousness of the meeting, which reportedly focused on stabilising internal structures and accelerating preparations for the major event.

Fintiri, who appeared upbeat after the discussions, told reporters that critical decisions were reached and that the party was moving forward with a united front. “We’ve just come out of our critical stakeholders’ meeting where a lot of elaborate decisions were taken,” he said.

He emphasised that the convention’s location was now settled and not subject to further reconsideration. “I want to tell you here that we are going to Ibadan for our convention, and the convention is sacrosanct.”

Attempts by journalists to secure additional clarification on the party’s direction were unsuccessful, as the governor was swiftly escorted out by his security personnel.

His abrupt departure left several questions unanswered, particularly regarding the party’s internal reconciliation efforts and whether any contentious issues were resolved during the meeting.

The confirmation of Ibadan as the host city marks a significant step for the PDP as it prepares for what is expected to be a highly consequential convention.

With ongoing internal tensions and competing interests among various blocs within the party, the event is poised to serve as a major test of unity and direction ahead of future electoral cycles.

Ibadan, one of Nigeria’s largest and oldest political hubs, has historically played host to critical political gatherings.

Its selection underscores the party’s attempt to rally its support base in the South-West and project organisational readiness.

The convention planning committee, led by Fintiri, is expected to release additional details in the coming days, including logistics, timelines, and procedural guidelines for delegates.

As the PDP continues navigating a turbulent period marked by leadership questions and strategic recalibrations, the success of the Ibadan convention may prove pivotal in determining the party’s momentum heading into upcoming national political contests.
