Former Governor of Kano State Rabiu Kwankwaso, has affirmed that Muhammadu Sanusi II is the sole legitimate Emir of Kano, warning that any other claimant is not recognized by the government or the people.

Kwankwaso made the declaration during the 4th convocation ceremony of Skyline University, where he also commended Emir Sanusi II for his dedication to education.

“This is not the first time Kano has witnessed an emir tussle,” Kwankwaso said. “When I was a student at the technical school in Kofar Nassarawa, people used to greet and hail a so-called second emir as he entered the city. He was not the legitimate emir, but people treated him as if he were. Today, any individual claiming to be emir apart from Muhammadu Sanusi II is fake and has no legitimacy.”

He praised Skyline University for appointing Emir Sanusi II as its chancellor, noting that education remains a top priority for the Kwankwassiya movement and the NNPP. “Emir Sanusi has shown great dedication to improving education, and this is a model for leadership that prioritizes knowledge and development,” Kwankwaso added.

The current dispute over the Kano Emirship involves Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero. In 2019, former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje created four additional emirates, reducing Sanusi’s authority. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf later repealed the law, restoring Sanusi’s position, though legal challenges continue, and a final verdict is yet to be delivered.

Kwankwaso’s remarks underline the NNPP’s firm stance on traditional leadership legitimacy and emphasize the critical role of education in the movement’s agenda.
