France International, Kylian Mbappé has filed a €240 million damages claim against his former club Paris Saint-Germain, PSG, accusing the Ligue 1 champions of unfair treatment and contractual violations during his final season with the team.

PSG, in turn, has launched a countersuit seeking €180 million in compensation from the player. Both cases were submitted on Monday before Paris’s labour court, escalating a long-running dispute that intensified before Mbappé’s free transfer to Real Madrid last year.

According to AFP, Mbappé’s complaint stems from his treatment at the start of the 2023–24 season. The 26-year-old forward alleges he was intentionally marginalised after refusing to sign a new contract with the Qatar-owned club. He was reportedly excluded from first-team training, placed in a separate group alongside players PSG hoped to sell, and denied participation in the club’s pre-season tour of Asia.

His situation, which drew criticism from the French players’ union, mirrored that of several footballers who have been isolated for contract-related reasons.

Mbappé missed PSG’s opening league fixture of the season before being reinstated following discussions with club executives. The World Cup winner eventually completed a free transfer to Real Madrid in the summer of 2024, signing a deal worth a reported €30 million per year.

PSG’s countersuit argues that Mbappé’s refusal to accept a record €300 million move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal deprived the club of significant financial gain. The French champions are seeking €180 million in damages, a figure calculated as part of the abandoned deal.

Mbappé scored 256 goals in 308 appearances during his seven-year spell in Paris, becoming PSG’s all-time top scorer. However, the club achieved its long-desired Champions League triumph for the first time in its history the season after his departure.

The legal battle between player and club now adds a dramatic new chapter to an already turbulent breakup, with both parties preparing for what could be a landmark ruling in football labour disputes.
