Governors elected on the platforms of the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress on Saturday gathered in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, for the official unveiling of the new Margi national attire.
The Margi people, the ethnic group of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, are predominantly found in Borno State and parts of Cameroon.
Speaking at the ceremony, Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed described Fintiri as “a bridge builder across the River Niger,” adding that a people without identity risk losing their essence. He emphasised that Nigerian democracy can only thrive through unity across religious and ethnic divides.
“Unity brings peace and peace brings development. It is very important that we politicians encourage peace by doing the right and lawful thing,” he said. He added that leaders must prioritise the welfare of citizens because “democracy cannot flourish without the people.”
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, also praised Fintiri for his “wonderful work and people-oriented projects,” urging residents of Adamawa to support the governor beyond party affiliations. He expressed optimism that Nigeria’s democracy will grow stronger with the right leaders at the helm.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum represented by his deputy, Umar Kadafursaid unity and peace must be the guiding principles of leadership for development and job creation to thrive. He urged Fintiri to sustain his inclusive leadership style and encouraged Nigerians to “unite and fight the outside enemy.”
In his remarks, Fintiri said, “people without memory are people without meaning.”
“We come together today to honour our roots, to remember who we are and what we must never forget. The Margi people have endured not because we are many but because we are united. Our faith is strong, our dignity firm, and our hearts loyal to peace,” he said.
He added that peace must go hand in hand with opportunity. “Today we unveil a new national attire simple, beautiful, symbolic. But more than a garment, it is a declaration that culture is not fashion, and tradition is not weakness.”
Other dignitaries present included Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas; PDP National Chairman, Saminu Turaki; and several top party officials.
