The Federal Capital Territory Security Committee has reactivated the joint security task force known as Operation Sweep FCT to prevent the spread of kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes into the territory.
The Commissioner of Police in charge of the FCT Command, Miller Dantawaye, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja while briefing journalists on the outcome of the expanded Security Committee meeting chaired by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Dantawaye said the committee which includes senior representatives of all security agencies operating in the FCT resolved to launch the renewed operation to fortify the territory against rising insecurity across parts of the country.
According to him, the minister has provided all required logistics to enable the agencies carry out the operation effectively.
“There has been heightened kidnapping in the country and we think the FCT should never experience that,” he said. “The Police, DSS and Civil Defence have jointly reviewed the situation and agreed to activate Operation Sweep.”
He explained that the exercise began on Tuesday and will focus on preventing violent crimes, especially kidnapping.

Under the renewed structure, four major operational sectors have been created two in Gwagwalada and Bwari, while the remaining two cover the city centre, stretching into Garki, Wuse, Mararaba, Karshi and Orozo.
Dantawaye said the task force is intensifying intelligence gathering, including active engagement with schools, religious institutions and community structures. Heavy logistics have also been deployed along FCT fringes, with daily patrols around schools to boost safety and confidence.
He assured residents that security agencies are fully prepared to safeguard lives and property, urging the public to continue with their normal activities without fear.
“We have deployed massively around churches and mosques,” he stated. “Christians and Muslims should feel safe to worship. We only ask residents to support us by providing credible information that can help prevent crime.”
Security agencies, he added, remain committed to keeping the FCT secure throughout the year-end period and beyond.
