The former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Mr Najeem Salaam has emerged as the African Democratic Congress, ADC, candidate for the 2026 Osun governorship election.

Salaam secured the party’s ticket on Monday at the ADC governorship primary held at the Ultimate Civic Centre in Osogbo where delegates converged for the exercise.

Before the commencement of voting, the Chairman of the ADC 2026 Primary Election Committee, Mr Emeka Nwajiuba, addressed party delegates and confirmed that Salaam was the only aspirant cleared to contest the primary.

Nwajiuba explained that documentation from the party’s Organising Secretary’s Office, as well as the screening exercise conducted ahead of the primary, showed that Salaam was the sole contender for the governorship ticket.

Following the address, a total of 528 accredited delegates drawn from the 332 wards across the state lined up to cast their votes in the primary.

Announcing the outcome of the exercise, Nwajiuba said all 528 delegates voted, with 520 votes declared valid in favour of Salaam, while eight votes were voided.

He formally declared Salaam as the ADC’s flag bearer for the 2026 Osun governorship election, citing the powers vested in the primary election committee by the party’s constitution.

In his acceptance speech, Salaam expressed gratitude to the leadership and members of the ADC for the trust placed in him and for handing him the party’s mandate ahead of the governorship race.

He described the ADC as a credible alternative platform capable of offering purposeful governance to the people of Osun State, pledging to carry the party’s flag with commitment and responsibility.

Salaam said he accepted the mandate with humility, hope and prayer, noting that the task ahead would require dedication and collective effort to address the challenges facing the state.

He also assured party members of his readiness to work with all stakeholders within the ADC to build a strong campaign and present a people-oriented vision for Osun ahead of the 2026 election.
