At least two persons were killed and three others critically injured on Wednesday following a multiple-vehicle collision involving a truck and four other vehicles at Iyana Meiran, along Meiran Road in Lagos State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority,LASTMA, confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki.

The fatal crash occurred inward Meiran Road, close to the Primary Health Centre,PHC, Meiran, when a Dangote Silo Mixer Truck, reportedly speeding, suffered a sudden brake failure, lost control and ploughed into several vehicles on the road.

Bakare-Oki said the out-of-control truck rammed into a commercial mini-bus, popularly known as a Korope (EPP 541 YF), and four tricycles (Marwa) with registration numbers KTU 360 QN, LND 444 QL, LSR 444 QN and EKY 122 QP.

The impact caused extensive damage, leaving vehicles mangled and trapping commuters within the wreckage. The driver of the Silo Mixer Truck reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash.

LASTMA personnel were swiftly deployed to the scene and, with the support of public-spirited passersby, rescued three severely injured victims who were trapped inside the crushed vehicles.

To prevent further accidents and ensure the safety of emergency responders, the authority cordoned off the affected corridor and implemented traffic diversions and control measures.

Security operatives from the Meiran Police Division were alerted, and the Divisional Police Officer personally led officers to the scene to provide security support during rescue and recovery operations.

The injured victims were rushed to Mobonke Hospital along Meiran Road for urgent medical attention, while the bodies of the two deceased persons were handed over to the Nigeria Police, who arranged their evacuation with an ambulance.

Bakare-Oki urged motorists to strictly observe government-approved speed limits and ensure proper vehicle maintenance, noting that speeding and mechanical failure remain major but preventable causes of fatal road accidents.

He expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy and full recovery.
