Tragedy struck Wednesday at the Kano State House of Assembly when two serving lawmakers were reported dead within minutes between each other.
The lawmaker representing Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Sarki Daneji, died barely minutes after the news broke of the death of his colleague, Hon. Aminu Sa’adu, who represented Ungoggo Local Government Area.
The deaths sent shockwaves across the state’s political circle, given the close timing of the incidents and the prominence of the two legislators in the Kano State House of Assembly.
The confirmation of the death of Sarki Aliyu Daneji was made public by Sanusi Bature, spokesperson of Kano State Governor, who announced it via a post on his official Facebook page.
At the last count at least eight lawmakers died in the year across party lines, affecting APC, Labour Party, and PDP members. The causes of death were listed as “brief illnesses, natural causes, car accidents, to kidnapping and murder.”

The year 2025 continued a troubling trend of lawmakers’ deaths in Nigeria. According to previous reports, the National Assembly had lost five members in the year leading up to mid-2024, and this pattern unfortunately continued into 2025. The deaths included both serving and former legislators, highlighting ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s political landscape but more especially the need for regular health screening.
These deaths have raised broader questions about the pressures of political office, security challenges facing lawmakers, and the importance of health and wellness among elected officials. Each of these individuals left behind legacies of public service, despite some having tragically brief tenures in office.
