Former Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida has urged local government leaders to earn public trust through integrity, transparency and people-focused governance, stressing that leadership closest to the people holds the greatest power to drive meaningful development.
Babangida gave the charge on Friday in Minna when he received the Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government Area of Niger State, Dr Mustapha Jibrin, who led a delegation to pay him a courtesy visit at his hilltop residence.
He emphasised that effective governance at the grassroots level remained critical to national development, noting that local councils serve as the first point of contact between government and the people.
Reflecting on his personal ties to the area, Babangida recalled his long-standing relationship with the family of the late Dr Mohammed Jibril Alheri and expressed gratitude for being alive to witness the visit. He said he was proud to be an indigene of Chanchaga Local Government Area.
The former leader told the chairman that his performance in office would be closely watched, adding that success would bring commendation, while failure would attract criticism. He prayed for wisdom and success for Jibrin throughout his tenure.
Babangida further urged the council chairman to prioritise the welfare of the people over personal interests, stressing that transparency and accountability were indispensable to sustainable progress at the local level.
