New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who took office on the 1st, has strongly criticized the U.S. for capturing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
Mamdani had previously shown an unexpectedly warm demeanour when meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington, D.C., last November.
According to The New York Times, Mamdani stated on that day, “I called President Trump directly to express opposition to this attack” and “made it clear that we oppose pushing for regime change in Venezuela and violating ‘federal and international law.’”

He added, “Such overt attempts at regime change do not only affect people overseas but also directly impact New Yorkers, including tens of thousands of Venezuelans who call this city home.” President Trump’s response has not been disclosed.
The two had their first meeting at the White House on the 21st of last month. Trump had criticized Mamdani as a ‘communist’ throughout the New York mayoral election campaign, and Mamdani had clashed with Trump by calling him a “fascist (far-right totalitarian),” but their first encounter drew attention for displaying a warm ‘bromance (male friendship).’
