Nigeria has secured a permanent seat on the Board of the African Central Bank, marking a significant diplomatic victory at the just concluded 39th Session of the Executive Council of the African Union.
The landmark decision, announced during the AU Executive Council meeting, recognizes Nigeria’s strategic importance in shaping the continent’s financial architecture and economic integration agenda.
The agreement also grants Nigeria representation on the Board of the Technical Convergence Committee of the African Monetary Institute, the precursor institution to the African Central Bank. According to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, these developments affirm the country’s “technical capacity, economic significance, and commitment to advancing Africa’s monetary integration agenda.”
In another major win for West Africa, candidates jointly proposed by the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, were successfully elected to the AU Peace and Security Council. The Ministry described the outcome as reflecting “strong cohesion, cooperation, and unity among ECOWAS Member States” and the region’s commitment to continental stability.

Nigeria further demonstrated continental leadership by organizing a Ministerial High-Level Panel Discussion on Regional Partnerships for Democracy during the summit. The event drew ministers, senior government officials, and delegates from across Africa and the international community, facilitating dialogue on strengthening democratic institutions, inclusive governance, and regional cooperation.
In a press statement, Nigeria’s Federal Government reaffirmed its dedication to the African Union’s objectives, particularly in promoting economic integration, institutional development, peace, security, and democratic governance.
“Nigeria remains dedicated to working collaboratively with Member States and regional bodies to advance Africa’s shared prosperity and sustainable development,” the statement read.
The 39th AU Executive Council Session outcomes consolidate Nigeria’s position as a key player in continental affairs and underscore its growing influence in Africa’s economic and political landscape.
