The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Mr. Joshua Ishaku of the All Progressive Congress the winner of the Bwari Area Council Chairmanship election.
Prof. Mohammed Nurudeen, the Returning Officer for the Bwari chairmanship election, who announced the results on Sunday in Bwari, disclosed that Ishaku polled a total of 18,466 votes and therefore declared him the winner.
” I am the returning officer for the 2026 FCT Area Council, Bwari chairmanship held on Feb. 21, 2026.
”That Joshua Ishaku, having certified the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” he said.
Nurudeen also said that the candidate of African Democratic Congress scored a total of 4254 votes, while that of the Zenith Labour Party scored 3515 to come in second and third places, respectively.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the chairmanship election was conducted in 10 wards of the council, namely; Igu, Shere, Dutse, Ushafa, Byazhin, Kuduru, Kubwa, Usuma, Bwari Central, and Kawu.
The Returning Officer noted that the election across all 10 wards was conducted peacefully, with voters turning out steadily throughout the day. Security agencies, including the police and civil defense, were deployed at strategic locations to ensure order and prevent any disruptions.
Observers at the collation centre reported that party agents closely monitored the sorting and counting of ballots, and no major complaints were recorded during the entire process. Both APC and opposition party agents commended INEC officials for maintaining transparency in the conduct of the election.
Supporters of Ishaku celebrated his victory immediately after the announcement, expressing confidence that his leadership would bring development and improved governance to the Bwari Area Council. Social media platforms were flooded with congratulatory messages from residents and political enthusiasts across the FCT.
With the declaration, Ishaku is expected to assume office after receiving his certificate of return. Stakeholders in Bwari expressed hope that the new council leadership would focus on grassroots development, infrastructure improvement, and the implementation of campaign promises aimed at benefiting all residents.
