U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he would never allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon

“They want to make a deal, but we haven’t heard those secret words, ‘We will never have a nuclear weapon.’

“My preference is to solve this problem through diplomacy. But one thing is certain: I will never allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon preference, Trump said in his State of the Union address.

I will never allow the world’s number one sponsor of terror to have a nuclear weapon. He accused Iran of restarting its nuclear program, working to build missiles that “soon” would be capable of reaching the United States and of being responsible for roadside bombings that have killed U.S. service members and civilians.

Trump said he had not received any commitment from Tehran to renounce nuclear weapons development.

Iran maintained that its nuclear program was for civilian purposes, though it had refused to give up uranium enrichment, which can be used to produce weapons-grade material.

We are in negotiations with them,” Mr Trump said when delivering the first State of the Union address of his second term to a joint session of Congress at the Capitol in Washington, D.C.

The U.S. and Iran are currently engaged in negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program, but no significant progress has been reported.

Tensions have remained high since last June, when Israel launched a 12-day military campaign against Iranian nuclear facilities, with support from the U.S…

And if we have to do something very harsh, we’ll do it. And I’m not doing it for us. I’m doing it for the world, and these are radicalized people, and they cannot have a nuclear weapon.’’

Iran retaliated with rocket attacks on Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv.
