President Bola Tinubu has promoted Alhaji Ibrahim Kabir Masari from Senior Special Assistant to Special Adviser on Political Affairs.
The elevation was announced on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. “As a special adviser, Masari will work alongside Alhaji Yau Darazo, whom Tinubu appointed in July 2023,” Onanuga said.
The Katsina-born politician previously served as the All Progressives Congress welfare secretary during Senator Adams Oshiomhole’s tenure as national chairman. He first joined Tinubu’s administration in 2023 as Senior Special Assistant, a role in which he liaised with party officials and coordinated political activities, particularly across the North-West region.
The position of Special Adviser is more senior than Senior Special Assistant, with broader strategic responsibilities and direct access to the President. The appointment does not require Senate confirmation, as presidential aides serve at the pleasure of the President.

Masari’s promotion is part of Tinubu’s strategy to strengthen his inner political circle and consolidate support ahead of key national engagements. Analysts note that such elevations often signal the president’s trust in the individual’s political judgment and loyalty.
Observers say the elevation reflects Tinubu’s preference for aides with a combination of grassroots knowledge and strategic oversight. As special adviser, Masari’s remit will expand to include high-level consultations and policy recommendations directly to the president.
Political commentators also highlight that the move strengthens North-West representation in the presidency while providing continuity in political planning and party coordination alongside Alhaji Yau Darazo.
Alhaji Ibrahim Kabir Masari is a seasoned politician and grassroots mobilizer widely recognized for his strategic acumen and loyalty. He gained national prominence in 2022 when he briefly served as the placeholder vice-presidential candidate for the APC during preparations for the 2023 elections.
Since July 2023, Masari has been actively involved in key APC events, including state congresses, party mobilization, and engagement with community leaders. He has also accompanied the president on working visits across the country, contributing to policy discussions and political strategy.
Recent reports indicate Masari is expected to take a more prominent role in coordinating the party’s upcoming activities, mediating intra-party disputes, and advising on national political strategy. His experience in conflict resolution and grassroots politics is seen as crucial in consolidating support for the APC across Nigeria.
Despite his increasing responsibilities, Masari maintains a low public profile, emphasising results over media attention. Observers suggest that Tinubu’s confidence in him reflects not only loyalty but also Masari’s ability to navigate complex political landscapes while keeping the president’s agenda at the forefront.
Masari remains distinct from former Katsina Governor Aminu Bello Masari and continues to build a reputation as a discreet and effective operator whose influence spans both party structures and national political planning.
