The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has lodged an appeal against FIFA’s decision rejecting its petition on DR Congo players’ eligibility in the 2026 World Cup Playoff.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the NFF had earlier petitioned FIFA, citing alleged irregularities in passport issuance involving some DR Congo players fielded during the playoff.

The match, played in Rabat, Morocco, ended 1-1 after regulation and extra time, with DR Congo securing victory via sudden-death penalties in the African Playoff final.

FIFA has rejected Nigeria’s appeal, according to an official communication sent to the NFF and confirmed by the federation on Tuesday in Abuja.

NFF General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi told NAN that the federation was dissatisfied with the ruling and determined to pursue justice through FIFA’s appellate process.

“We respect FIFA but firmly disagree with this decision. We believe there are strong grounds for appeal and will present additional evidence,” Sanusi said.

He assured Nigerians that the NFF remained committed to protecting the integrity of the game and ensuring fairness in international competitions.

“Our duty is to defend Nigeria’s interest. We cannot overlook issues that may compromise transparency and credibility in such an important match.

“We expect the appeals process to be thorough and fair.

“Our objective is not conflict, but clarity and adherence to the rules governing global football,” Sanusi said.

NAN also reports that the inter-confederation play-offs is scheduled to run from March 26 to 31 in Guadalajara and Monterrey, Mexico, where DR Congo are slated to face either Jamaica or New Caledonia.
