President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, in a move aimed at boosting the training capacity for new police recruits and strengthening internal security.9
The President also approved a special take-off grant of N15 billion for the new institution, with the funding to be drawn from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TetFund) 2026 allocation.
The approval is in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which allows for the expansion of the academy beyond its main campus in Wudil, Kano State, into multiple campuses across the country.
According to the State House, the intervention fund will be used to provide critical infrastructure, academic facilities, student hostels and essential training equipment needed to support the immediate take-off of the new campus.
The decision followed a high-level consultative meeting involving the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission.
The meeting recommended Erinja as the site for the new campus after considering factors such as student intake capacity, available funding, academic quality assurance and the long-term manpower needs of the Nigeria Police Force, which is currently expanding recruitment.
The new campus is expected to play a key role in producing more trained police personnel, especially at a time when the force requires increased numbers of well-prepared officers to meet the country’s growing security demands.
President Tinubu said the expansion of the Police Academy would enhance institutional governance, improve modern policing education and contribute to national security.
