The Police Command in Benue State has confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the killing of a National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, member, Mr Benjamin Msughaondo.
The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Edet Udeme, told the NAN on Friday that the tragic incident occurred around midnight at Major settlement near the Buruku Local Government Secretariat on Sunday.
Benjamin was serving in Gombe State and had returned home on a short holiday when the tragic incident occurred.
Police accounts said the deceased was allegedly accused by a group of hoodlums of stealing a motorcycle and they apprehended him on the suspicion. Before he could properly identify himself and present his ID card, one of the vigilante leaders began beating him without any form of investigation, insisting he was lying, others joined, and he was beaten into a coma.

They continued beating him until he lost consciousness. When they realized the severity of his condition It was only then that they rushed him to a hospital where he was confirmed dead.
She explained that preliminary findings revealed that the accusation was false, as documents relating to the motorcycle indicated that the deceased was its rightful owner.
The police spokesperson further stated that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime, while another suspect remains at large.
“He was wrongly accused of stealing a motorcycle, and without verifying the claim, he was mobbed to death,” Udeme said.
She added that efforts were ongoing to apprehend fleeing suspects, assuring  that a thorough investigation would be carried out to ensure all those involved are brought to justice.
