Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Saturday night hosted a state banquet in honour of Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, celebrating him as a distinguished product of the state.

The event, held at the State House in Marina, brought together senior government officials, security chiefs, community leaders, and dignitaries.

In a statement accompanying photos from the banquet shared on his X handle on Sunday, Sanwo-Olu described the police chief as “one of our own,” noting that long before his national prominence, Lagos shaped his character.

“Tonight, we hosted a State Banquet in celebration of one of our own, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

“There is something inspiring about seeing one of ours rise through the ranks with discipline and a clear commitment to service,” he wrote.

Sanwo-Olu noted that the police chief’s early life and education in Lagos shaped his values and career trajectory.

“Long before the world knew him as IGP, Lagos knew him. The streets of this city shaped him. The lecture halls of the Lagos State University refined him and the communities of Lagos Island where he was born taught him early lessons about life, responsibility and service,” he stated.

The governor also referenced Disu’s previous role in Lagos, where he led the Rapid Response Squad.

“From his time leading the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, where he strengthened security and built public confidence, to his national assignments, he has consistently shown what dedication and excellence look like,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu added that Disu’s career reflects the importance of integrity and hard work.

“His journey reminds us that greatness comes from hard work, integrity, and service. Lagos does not just raise dreamers. We raise people who lead and build.

“Tonight were a celebration of service and the Lagos spirit. We are proud. Proud that the values he carries to the Force Headquarters were shaped here and proud that he continues to represent us with discipline and honour,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu concluded, “Here’s to the OG Good Guy of the Good Guys, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, son of Lagos and servant of Nigeria.”

Born on April 13, 1966, on Lagos Island, Disu completed his primary education at Mayflower Junior School in Ogun State and later attended St. Gregory’s College, Lagos, finishing secondary school in 1985.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in English education from Lagos State University in 1990.

Before President Bola Tinubu appointed him as IG on February 24, following the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun, Disu had previously commanded the RRS from 2015 to 2021.
