The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi for alleged money laundering offences.
A source within the commission said Abdullahi was arrested in Abuja on Wednesday and was being held in EFCC custody, adding that investigation centred on financial transactions estimated at N500 billion.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the commission was investigating fraud and money laundering allegations linked to the agency.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report.
President Bola Tinubu appointed Abdullahi as Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria on Oct. 24, 2023.
The Energy Commission is the statutory body responsible for regulating, planning, and coordinating the development and use of energy resources in the country. Its mandate typically covers the electricity, petroleum, natural gas, and renewable energy sectors, with a focus on ensuring reliable, safe, affordable, and sustainable energy supply.
