Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has commended the Department of State Services, DSS, for the arrest of a suspected arms courier intercepted in Kano while allegedly transporting weapons believed to be intended for criminal elements in Katsina State.
Credible News reports that operatives on Thursday arrested a suspected arms courier, at Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State, intercepting a consignment of weapons believed to be destined for a bandit kingpin operating in Zamfara State.
Security sources say the arrest of the courier known as Abubakar Muhammad, followed actionable intelligence which indicated that he was in transit to deliver three AK-47 rifles, four RPG tubes, and two empty magazines to one Saidu Marafa, a notorious bandit kingpin actively operating in Zamfara State.
“The operation was the direct result of intelligence generated by the Service, which tracked the courier’s movement and mobilised operatives to intercept him before the weapons could leave Kano State”.
Governor Yusuf described the operation as a major breakthrough in the ongoing fight against banditry, terrorism, and other violent crimes threatening communities across Northern Nigeria.
According to information provided by the DSS, the suspect, Muhammad Abubakar, 30, was arrested in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State while allegedly conveying four RPG tubes, three AK-47 rifles, and two empty magazines to Funtua in Katsina.
The Governor praised the professionalism, vigilance, and intelligence-driven approach of DSS operatives, noting that the timely interception of the arms prevented them from falling into the hands of bandits and other criminal groups.
He said the successful operation highlights the critical role of intelligence gathering and inter-agency collaboration in tackling emerging security threats.
Governor Yusuf reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State Government to supporting security agencies through sustained cooperation, logistical assistance, and policies aimed at strengthening public safety across the state.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing credible information to security agencies to support ongoing efforts to combat crime and maintain peace.
The Governor expressed confidence that ongoing investigations would lead to the arrest and prosecution of all those connected to the arms trafficking network.
