Kylian Mbappe has emerged as the closest challenger to Lionel Messi in the race for both the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot and the all-time World Cup goalscoring record.
The France captain continued his remarkable scoring run with a brace against Iraq, taking his tally at the ongoing tournament to four goals and moving within one strike of tournament leader Messi.
Messi currently tops the Golden Boot standings with five goals after scoring a hat-trick against Algeria and a brace in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria.
Mbappe is level with Norway striker Erling Haaland on four goals, setting up a fascinating battle for the tournament’s top scorer award as the knockout rounds approach.
Messi recently became the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history after taking his career tally to 18 goals, surpassing Germany legend Miroslav Klose’s previous record of 16. However, Mbappe is already breathing down the Argentine’s neck.
The 27-year-old now has 16 World Cup goals from just 16 appearances, drawing level with Klose and sitting only two goals behind Messi’s all-time mark.
Mbappe’s scoring record has been spread across three tournaments. He scored four goals during France’s triumphant 2018 campaign, followed that with eight goals at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and has already added four more goals in the group stage of the 2026 edition.
His latest brace also strengthened an extraordinary record of one goal per game at the World Cup. Mbappe’s 16 goals in 16 matches makes him the only player among the top five scorers in tournament history to maintain a perfect goals-per-match ratio.

The France forward also extended his World Cup record for multi-goal matches, registering his sixth career game with at least two goals.
With 16 goals, Mbappe now stands alone as France’s highest goalscorer in World Cup history, moving clear of legendary Just Fontaine’s tally of 13.
As France advance to the knockout stage, Mbappe is guaranteed at least one more opportunity to close the gap on Messi in what is rapidly becoming one of the greatest individual battles in World Cup history.
While Messi relies on a record sixth World Cup appearance and unmatched longevity, Mbappe’s relentless scoring pace has ensured the race for football’s most coveted scoring records remains far from over
