Ivory Coast’s historic FIFA World Cup campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion on Tuesday after Norway claimed a 2-1 victory with a late winner in their Round of 32 clash at Dallas Stadium.

The defeat denied Les Éléphants a place in the last 16 despite another spirited display in their first appearance beyond the group stage.

Norway, meanwhile, secured their first-ever World Cup knockout victory at the third attempt and advanced to face Brazil in New York on July 5.

Ivory Coast gradually settled after Norway’s bright opening and created the better chances for large spells of the first half.

Nicolas Pépé went close after being picked out by Yan Diomandé but failed to find either the target or a teammate, while Ghislain Konan also threatened from a tight angle.

Just when the opening period appeared destined to end goalless, Antonio Nusa produced the breakthrough in the 39th minute.

The winger drifted in from the left before curling a superb effort beyond Yahia Fofana to give Norway the lead. Norway almost doubled their advantage before the interval, but Erling Braut Haaland was twice denied as Ivory Coast stayed within touching distance.

Emerse Faé’s side responded positively after the restart, with Pépé forcing Ørjan Nyland into a smart save as Ivory Coast searched for an equalizer.

Norway also created opportunities, but substitute Amad Diallo produced a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Torbjørn Heggem from close range.

Diallo then transformed the contest at the other end. Introduced after initially being left out of the starting line-up, the Manchester United forward dribbled past several Norwegian defenders before finishing brilliantly in the 74th minute to level the score and breathe fresh life into Ivory Coast’s challenge.

However, with extra time looming, Norway struck the decisive blow. Patrick Berg squared the ball into the path of Haaland, who arrived at the right moment to convert a simple finish and restore Norway’s advantage late in the match.

Ivory Coast pushed for another equalizer in the closing moments, but Nyland produced an excellent save to tip Diallo’s free kick over the crossbar and preserve Norway’s victory.

Despite dominating several attacking statistics, Ivory Coast could not find another breakthrough. The result saw Ivory Coast become the second African nation eliminated in the Round of 32 following South Africa’s narrow 1-0 loss to Canada.
