Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, 46, has been unanimously elected Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, at the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Faye succeeds Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, who assumed the regional leadership position in June 2025 after the completion of former Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s two-year tenure.

Faye emerged as the new leader of the West African bloc following deliberations by ECOWAS leaders at the summit, where member states reviewed pressing regional issues, including security threats, political instability, economic integration and the future of cooperation among countries in the region.

His election comes at a crucial period for ECOWAS, which is facing significant challenges, including persistent insecurity caused by terrorism and violent extremism, democratic setbacks in some member states, and growing divisions within the bloc.

The regional organization has also been working to address tensions with Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger after the three military-led countries officially withdrew from ECOWAS following disagreements over sanctions and the bloc’s response to military takeovers in their countries.

As chairman, Faye is expected to lead efforts to strengthen regional unity, promote democratic governance and rebuild diplomatic ties with the former member states. His administration is also expected to focus on restoring confidence in ECOWAS and advancing initiatives aimed at improving economic cooperation and stability across West Africa.

The Senegalese president, who came into office in April 2024 after winning the country’s presidential election, has positioned himself as an advocate for institutional reforms, sovereignty and stronger cooperation among African nations

His leadership of ECOWAS will be closely watched as the bloc seeks solutions to security concerns, political transitions and the challenge of maintaining regional integration amid shifting alliances in West Africa.
