A teenager died and several people were injured during celebrations of Spain’s victory in the World Cup after a fountain onto collapsed in the west of the country, local authorities and media said on Monday.

“The city hall of Ciudad Rodrigo expresses its sadness and presents its condolences for the death of a boy of 13,” the municipality said on a Facebook post.

“What should have been a celebration of Spain’s team in the football World Cup turned into tragedy,” it said, adding that several others were injured.

“A few minutes after 12:30 am local time, rescue services received calls over a fountain collapsing on numerous people,” emergency services said in a post on X, adding that another youth had been injured.

Local media reported that the fountain collapsed under the weight of numerous people who had climbed onto it to celebrate Spain’s first World Cup victory since 2010 in the football-mad nation.

Meanwhile, Spain defender Marc Cucurella has hailed his team’s “incredible” defensive display after La Roja defeated Argentina 1-0 to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the second period of extra time at the MetLife Stadium as Spain claimed their second World Cup title.

Luis de la Fuente’s side finished the tournament with the best defensive record of any World Cup-winning team, conceding just one goal in eight matches.

Belgium was the only side to breach Spain’s defence during the tournament, scoring in the quarter-final in Los Angeles.

Reflecting on the achievement, Cucurella said Spain’s defensive organization played a decisive role in their successful campaign.

“When you don’t concede, I think it’s much easier to win,” he said.

The left-back stressed that the defensive success was the result of a collective effort rather than the work of the backline alone.

“We’ve done an incredible job in that regard all tournament, and not just the defenders and the goalkeeper, because I think it’s a team effort.
