The Nigeria Cricket Federation, NCF, has reduced the Junior Female YellowGreens’ training camp from 22 to 18 players as preparations intensify for the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Division 1 Qualifier in Tanzania.

The team has entered the final phase of its open camp in Benin City, Edo State, where the remaining players are undergoing intensive training and evaluation ahead of the announcement of the final squad.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday in Lagos by the federation’s Media Manager, Zeal Ibe. According to the statement, the current phase of the camp is designed to assess players in a high-performance environment, with emphasis on technical ability, tactical awareness, team cohesion and role definition.

The players are also expected to participate in a series of practice matches against the senior women’s national team and other selected opponents to help the coaching crew evaluate both individual performances and the team’s overall readiness for the continental qualifier.

NCF said the open camp remains a key part of its long-term high-performance programme, providing emerging talents with a structured pathway to compete for national team selection while meeting the standards required for international competition.

It added that competition for places in the squad remains intense, with players being assessed on their performance, consistency and discipline.

The coaching crew also commended the players for their adaptability and ability to perform under pressure as the final squad selection draws closer.

The 18 players retained in camp are Christabel Chukwuonye, Shola Adekunle, Omosigho Eguakun, Beauty Oguai, Jessica Bienni, Deborah Bassey, Inyene Ubong, Peace Usen, Anointed Akhigbe, Chisom Okpe, Precious Simon, Jennifer Godwin, GodsGift Ezeali, Promise Oko-otu, Elizabeth Emmanuel, Praise Onaghise, Glory Idiahi and Favour Effiong.

The federation said preparations would continue in Benin City as the Junior Female YellowGreens remain focused on securing places in the final squad and representing Nigeria at the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Division 1 Qualifier in Tanzania.

Head coach Sarah Bakhita said the camp’s objective extends beyond identifying the most talented players, stressing that building a united and competitive team is equally important.

She explained that the current phase is focused on strengthening teamwork, defining individual roles and ensuring every player understands their responsibilities.

She added that the practice matches would provide valuable opportunities to measure the team’s progress and readiness for the challenges ahead.
