Japan on Tuesday issued tsunami warnings as an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 7.1 struck southern Japan, with reports of injuries.
The Japanese television broadcaster NHK reports that the fire service has received numerous emergency calls relating to injuries, fires and reports of strong aftershocks.
Power has been cut to around 48,000 households in Kumamoto Prefecture, on the south-western main island of Kyushu, where the epicenter of the earthquake hit at a depth of 10 kilometers.
No irregularities have been recorded at nuclear power stations, Japanese media reported. NHK said several sections of motorway in Kyushu have been closed.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi instructed her ministries to assess the situation swiftly and take the necessary emergency measures.
The national meteorological agency has meanwhile issued a warning of tsunami waves up to 1 meter high.
The Kumamoto region was struck by a severe earthquake 10 years ago, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale.
Dozens of people lost their lives as a result, while tens of thousands had to be temporarily housed in emergency accommodation.
There was also severe damage to buildings, including the famous Kumamoto Castle.
