The first trailer for the film adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling fantasy novel Children of Blood and Bone is creating a buzz, offering a first look at a star-studded cast that includes Nigerian talents Ayra Starr and Richard Mofe-Damijo alongside major international actors.
Set for release in January 2027, the fantasy epic follows Zélie Adebola, a young woman from the fictional kingdom of Orïsha who sets out on a dangerous mission to restore magic after it is wiped out by a ruthless king who fears its power.
The film is based on the first instalment of Adeyemi’s acclaimed trilogy and was co-written by Nigerian-American author and filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood, who also directed the Bafta-nominated historical drama The Woman King.
The newly released trailer introduces viewers to the world of Orïsha, opening with Lashana Lynch as Jumoke, the mother of Zélie, who is portrayed by South African actress Thuso Mbedu.
In the opening moments, Jumoke urges her daughter not to fear her abilities before revealing that Zélie was born with a powerful gift.
The trailer then moves through breathtaking landscapes of Orïsha, including forests, villages and mystical locations, as Jumoke explains that magic once flowed freely among the people before it was taken away by those who feared its strength.
The story takes a darker turn as an army attacks their village and captures Jumoke, setting Zélie on a path to uncover her power and fight to restore what was lost.

Later scenes show Viola Davis portraying Lekan, a mentor figure who reveals that she has trained Zélie for years because she believes the young woman has the ability to bring magic back to the kingdom.
The adaptation also features significant Nigerian musical contributions, with singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, serving as the executive music producer and curator of the official soundtrack. Tems will also contribute original songs to the project.
The film’s ensemble cast includes Cynthia Erivo as Admiral Kaea, Damson Idris as Prince Inan, Idris Elba, Amandla Stenberg, Ayra Starr, Richard Mofe-Damijo and other notable performers.
Despite the excitement surrounding the adaptation, Adeyemi has publicly distanced herself from the project, hinting at disagreements with the production team.
Last month, the author wrote on social media that there was a reason she would not be sharing posts about the film and said she would not discuss the adaptation of her work.
She also shared a screenshot of a message allegedly sent to Amandla Stenberg, who plays Princess Amari, asking the actress not to mention Adeyemi’s name during interviews or videos.
Adeyemi did not provide further details about the reported disagreement, leaving questions about her involvement and relationship with the adaptation.
