England midfielder Jordan Henderson has joined Chelsea on a two-year contract after mutually agreeing to terminate his deal with Brentford.

The 36-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge after making 32 Premier League appearances for Brentford during the 2025-26 season.

Henderson brings a wealth of experience, having captained Liverpool to the Premier League title in 2019-20 and won the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup during his time at Anfield.

After leaving Liverpool in 2023, Henderson joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq before moving to Dutch club Ajax in January 2024. He returned to the Premier League with Brentford last summer.

Speaking after completing the move, Henderson said the opportunity to join Chelsea under manager Xabi Alonso was one he could not refuse.

“Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” he said.

“For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”

Henderson began his professional career at Sunderland and made his Premier League debut as a substitute in a 5-0 defeat to Chelsea on 1 November 2008.

He earned the first of his 91 England caps in 2010 and has represented the Three Lions at seven major international tournaments, including the UEFA Euro 2020 final, where England lost to Italy on penalties.

This summer, Henderson became the first English player to feature in four different FIFA World Cups when he came on as a late substitute in England’s 2-0 victory over Panama.

However, that proved to be his only appearance at the tournament after he suffered a broken arm in unusual circumstances. Henderson fell awkwardly while attempting to jump over advertising hoardings following England’s 3-2 round-of-16 victory over Mexico, a match in which he did not feature.

Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season, one point and one place behind Brentford, and failed to qualify for European competition.

New manager Xabi Alonso has overseen an extensive summer recruitment drive, with Henderson becoming Chelsea’s 10th signing of the transfer window.

The Blues have also completed a club-record £117 million deal for England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. Veteran England striker Danny Welbeck joined from Brighton in a reported £5 million move on Saturday, while Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco arrived on Sunday.

Chelsea have also signed defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52 million, right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £42 million, and Sporting winger Geovany Quenda for £40 million.

The club’s other arrivals include Strasbourg striker Emmanuel Emegha, Corinthians left-back Denner, 18, and 17-year-old striker Dastan Satpaev from Kairat Almaty.
