Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, says electricity distribution companies, DisCos, installed 227,559 prepaid meters across Nigeria in March and April 2026, marking further progress in efforts to reduce estimated billing and narrow the country’s metering gap.
It was reported that data released by the commission in its latest Metering Status of Distribution Companies factsheet showed that 115,905 customers were metered in March, while another 111,654 received meters in April.
The development pushed Nigeria’s national metering rate from 56.54 percent in March to 59.69 percent by the end of April.
NERC said the total number of metered electricity customers rose to 7.43 million out of 12.45 million active customers nationwide as of April. Among the 11 electricity distribution companies, Eko DisCo recorded the highest metering rate at 88.78 percent, followed by Ikeja DisCo with 87.93 percent and Abuja DisCo with 80.08 percent.

The latest figures come amid renewed efforts by the federal government to address the country’s persistent metering shortfall. Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe recently described the metering gap as a major contributor to the liquidity crisis in Nigeria’s electricity sector, noting that inadequate metering has hindered accurate revenue collection, discouraged investment and weakened service delivery across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, NESI.
In June, NERC also introduced a special compensation scheme for eligible Band A customers affected by reduced electricity supply following generation shortfalls recorded between February and March 2026, as part of measures to improve consumer protection in the power sector.
