The Kano State Fire Service has rescued 13 people after a residential building collapsed at Dan Dishe, Kwanar Yashi, in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, with the Fire Service receiving a distress call at about 4:32 a.m. before immediately deploying personnel to the scene.

Three of those rescued were unconscious, while authorities had yet to determine the identities of the victims. The service’s Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi, disclosed this in a statement issued in Kano on Saturday.

According to Abdullahi, the distress call was received from Aminu Sani-Warure, a personnel attached to the service’s Emergency Response Unit. “Upon receiving the report, the service immediately mobilized firemen to the scene,” the statement said.

The collapsed structure was estimated to measure about 20 by 30 feet. Firefighters conducted rescue operations at the site and successfully brought out all 13 victims reported in the statement.

Three of the rescued victims were unconscious at the time they were brought out, although the statement did not provide further details on their medical condition or whether they were subsequently taken to a hospital.

The Fire Service also did not disclose whether anyone remained trapped under the rubble or whether there were fatalities as of the time of the statement.

The cause of the collapse remains unknown, with the Fire Service saying an investigation is underway to determine what led to the structural failure.

The incident adds to a series of building-related emergencies recorded in Kano in recent weeks. On July 10, 2026, a two-storey building under construction collapsed along Sultan Road in Kano metropolis, killing one person and injuring three others. The Fire Service said workers had noticed signs of structural instability shortly before that collapse.

Another incident occurred on July 19 at Kofar Mata Zango in Kano Municipal Local Government Area, where a worker was rescued after a fence wall collapsed during a demolition exercise. The Fire Service said the victim was taken to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital for medical attention.

Building collapses have also been reported in Kano during periods of heavy rainfall. In July 2025, a three-storey building collapsed in the Abedi area of Sabon Gari, Fagge Local Government Area, following a heavy downpour, with four people confirmed dead and seven others injured.

Against this backdrop, the Kano State Fire Service urged residents to observe necessary safety precautions, particularly during the rainy season, to reduce the risk of similar incidents.

The service said the investigation into the Dan Dishe collapse would establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. Further details on the condition of the rescued victims and the outcome of the investigation are expected as authorities continue their assessment.
