A Kano Magistrates’ Court has ordered the remand of 25-year-old Maimuna Idris in a correctional centre over allegations that she severed her boyfriend’s genitals with a knife after discovering that he planned to marry another woman.

Idris, a resident of Maigatari Local Government Area of Jigawa State, is facing two charges of attempted culpable homicide and causing grievous hurt over the alleged attack on Ashiru Sani at a hotel in Kano.

The incident occurred on July 27 at Durbar Hotel in the Badawa area of Kano, where police were alerted to an alleged knife attack involving the couple.

According to the prosecution, the Badawa Police Division received a report from the hotel’s management at about 12:50 p.m. that Idris had allegedly attacked Sani with a sharp knife.

The prosecution told the court that the alleged attack occurred earlier that day, at about 11 a.m., after Idris reportedly discovered that Sani intended to marry another woman.

The victim sustained serious injuries and was immediately taken to Abubakar Imam Urology Hospital in Kano for medical treatment.

The Kano State Police Command had earlier confirmed the arrest of Idris in connection with the incident, saying preliminary investigations indicated that she allegedly attacked her boyfriend after learning of his plans to marry another woman. Police said the knife used in the attack was recovered as an exhibit.

The prosecution counsel, H.A. Sani-Buhari, told the court that the offences contravened Sections 229 and 248 of the Penal Code. Idris pleaded guilty to both charges when they were read to her.

However, the guilty plea did not immediately conclude the case. Magistrate Sadiya Usman ordered that Idris be remanded in a correctional centre and adjourned the matter until September 9 for further mention.

The case follows the police warning against taking the law into one’s hands after the incident, with the command saying the matter would be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Idris remains in custody pending further proceedings, while the court is expected to revisit the case when it reconvenes in September.
