Arsenal have made a sensational start to the 2026 Community Shield against Manchester City, with defender Riccardo Calafiori putting the Gunners ahead inside the opening minute.
Calafiori found the back of the net after just 23 seconds, giving Arsenal the fastest goal in Community Shield history and immediately putting Manchester City on the back foot.
The goal came after Myles Lewis-Skelly played an excellent through ball into Calafiori’s path. The Italian defender raced through on goal before calmly finishing past Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The lightning-fast opener was a dream start for Mikel Arteta’s side, who are looking to begin the new season with silverware and send an early statement to their Premier League rivals.
For Calafiori, the goal also provides a timely reminder of his attacking ability from the left side of Arsenal’s defence. The Italian has become known for his willingness to push forward and move into central areas when Arsenal have possession.
Calafiori’s strike came quicker than any previous goal in the history of the Community Shield.
The previous fastest goal in the competition came in 1968, when Manchester City’s Bobby Owen scored against West Bromwich Albion after 35 seconds. City eventually won that match 6-1.

Arsenal’s early advantage has therefore added another record to a fixture already carrying plenty of significance for both clubs.
The Community Shield pits the Premier League champions against the FA Cup winners and traditionally serves as the first major competitive fixture of the English season.
Arsenal are aiming to use the match as an early statement ahead of the new Premier League campaign, while Manchester City are beginning a new era under manager Enzo Maresca following Pep Guardiola’s departure.
The early goal gives Arsenal momentum, but City have plenty of time to respond as the match continues.
With the Community Shield trophy at stake, both sides will be looking to establish control and start the season on a positive note.
Arsenal have doubled their lead against Manchester City in the 2026 Community Shield, with Kai Havertz making it 2-0 in the 28th minute at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
Havertz finished from close range after a well-worked Arsenal attack. Martin Ødegaard delivered a cross towards the area, with summer signing Christos Tzolis nodding the ball back across goal for Havertz to bundle it over the line. Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma got a hand to the effort but could not prevent the second goal.
The goal comes after Riccardo Calafiori opened the scoring after just 24 seconds, setting a new record for the fastest goal in Community Shield history. Myles Lewis-Skelly provided the assist for the Italian’s opener.
Arsenal have therefore taken a commanding 2-0 lead before the half-hour mark, with Mikel Arteta’s side controlling the early stages and creating problems for a Manchester City team beginning life under new manager Enzo Maresca.
City have threatened through Erling Haaland and Phil Foden, but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has remained alert. Raya produced an important save to deny Haaland after a cutback from Jeremy Doku, while Arsenal’s defence also dealt with another close-range effort from Doku.
The second goal further increases the pressure on City, who are looking to begin the Maresca era with the Community Shield trophy. Arsenal, meanwhile, are looking to add another piece of silverware after their Premier League success last season.
Current score: Arsenal 2-0 Manchester City.
