The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has directed Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu and the entire technical crew to step down from their positions with immediate effect.

The decision was announced by the football governing body in a brief statement released through its official X account, with the NFF saying the directive was issued by its Executive Committee following the team’s recent disappointing results.

“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the @NGSuper_Falcons to step down with immediate effect,” the federation stated.

The development comes after the Super Falcons endured a disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON, where they failed to progress beyond the quarter-final stage.

Nigeria, one of the most successful teams in the history of the competition with 10 African titles, suffered a 1-0 defeat to fierce rivals Cameroon in the quarter final.

The loss brought an unexpected end to the Falcons’ campaign and sparked renewed concerns over the team’s performances and technical direction.

The disappointment was compounded by Nigeria’s failure to secure a route to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In another crucial encounter, the Super Falcons were beaten 2-1 by South Africa, a result that denied the nine-time African champions a place in the inter-confederation playoffs.

The outcome dealt a major blow to Nigeria’s hopes of featuring at the next Women’s World Cup and intensified calls for changes within the national team setup.

Madugu had faced growing criticism over the team’s performances, with pressure mounting on the NFF to review the coaching arrangement.

Although the Super Falcons remain one of Africa’s most decorated women’s football teams, their recent results have raised questions about the direction of the squad and the effectiveness of the current technical structure.

The NFF’s latest decision now signals the beginning of a major change in the management of the national women’s team.

Madugu and the other members of the technical crew are expected to vacate their positions immediately, bringing an end to their involvement in the current coaching setup.

However, the federation has not disclosed who will take charge of the Super Falcons following the decision.

The NFF is also yet to announce whether a permanent head coach will be appointed immediately or whether an interim technical team will be constituted to oversee the team’s next assignment.

The search for a new coaching structure is expected to attract significant attention, given the Super Falcons’ status as Nigeria’s flagship women’s football team.

The federation will also face pressure to ensure that any new technical arrangement addresses the team’s recent shortcomings and restores confidence ahead of upcoming international competitions.

For now, the immediate focus remains on the transition following the departure of Madugu and his technical crew, with further announcements from the NFF expected in due course.
