President Bola Tinubu has sent felicitations to former military Head of State, retired Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, on his 85th birthday, describing him as an outstanding Nigerian leader whose years in power left lasting imprints on the country.
Tinubu, in a birthday message issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Monday in Abuja, highlighted Babangida’s contributions to Nigeria’s political, economic and infrastructural development, while acknowledging his continued influence on national discourse decades after leaving office.
Babangida, popularly known as IBB, was born on Aug. 17, 1941, in Minna, Niger State. He joined the Nigerian Army in the early 1960s and rose through the ranks before becoming Chief of Army Staff under the military administration of Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.
He assumed power on Aug. 27, 1985, after leading a coup that removed Buhari from office. Babangida subsequently headed the country’s military government for eight years, leaving office on Aug. 26, 1993, amid a prolonged and controversial transition to democratic rule.
Reflecting on Babangida’s time in office, Tinubu said the former leader had influenced Nigeria in ways that continued to shape the country.
“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has. His eight-year reign left enduring marks on our political, economic, and geographic landscape,” the president said.
Tinubu credited Babangida with expanding the Nigerian economy, developing infrastructure and establishing agencies and institutions that, according to him, continued to serve national interests.

“But for his foresight, wisdom, and sense of equity and fairness, many states in the federation might not exist today,” he said.
Babangida’s administration oversaw several major political and economic changes. Among them was the introduction of the Structural Adjustment Programme in 1986, which sought to reduce the economy’s dependence on oil, encourage agricultural and non-oil exports, reform state-owned enterprises and address the country’s external debt challenges.
His administration also pursued an elaborate transition programme aimed at returning Nigeria to civilian rule. The process eventually culminated in the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was won by the late businessman and politician, Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.
The election was annulled by Babangida, triggering a major political crisis. He stepped aside from office on Aug. 26, 1993, handing power to an Interim National Government headed by Chief Ernest Shonekan. The arrangement lasted less than three months before Gen. Sani Abacha seized power in November 1993.
Despite the controversies surrounding his administration, Babangida has remained an influential figure in Nigeria’s political history. President Tinubu said the former military leader’s contributions had earned him an enduring place in the country’s historical narrative.
“Even in retirement, living a quiet life at his Hilltop residence in Niger State, General Babangida continues to offer valuable counsel and guidance to the nation,” Tinubu said. “His advice and wise counsel remain an inspiration to younger generations.”
The president wished the retired general continued good health, strength and many more years. “I wish you continued grace, good health, and renewed strength. May Almighty Allah keep you with us for many more years to come,” Tinubu said.
