Arsenal began their defense of the Premier League title with a commanding 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium.
Mikel Arteta’s side produced a dominant performance in the opening match of the 2026/27 campaign, immediately sending a strong message about their ambitions to retain the league title. Goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and captain Martin Odegaard secured all three points for the Gunners.
Arsenal entered the contest as defending champions, while Coventry were returning to the Premier League after a 25-year absence. The visitors, managed by former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard, faced a difficult opening assignment against an Arsenal side that had already demonstrated its attacking quality during pre-season and in the Community Shield.
From the opening stages, Arsenal looked comfortable in possession and controlled much of the game. Their movement and passing repeatedly caused problems for Coventry, who struggled to create clear opportunities in the final third.
The hosts eventually broke the deadlock through Havertz, giving Arsenal the advantage and settling any early nerves surrounding their title defence.
Saka then added a second goal to put Arsenal firmly in control. The England international was a constant threat from the wide areas, while Arsenal continued to dominate possession and dictate the tempo of the contest.
Odegaard completed the scoring with Arsenal’s third goal, putting the result beyond doubt and ensuring the champions started the new campaign with a convincing victory.
Coventry struggled to match Arsenal’s intensity and quality throughout the encounter. Although Lampard’s side showed occasional flashes of attacking intent, they were unable to seriously test Arsenal’s defence or goalkeeper David Raya.

The result represents a difficult return to the top flight for Coventry, who earned promotion after an impressive Championship campaign last season. Their immediate challenge will now be to regroup quickly and compete against the other established Premier League sides.
For the Gunners, however, the victory provides an ideal start to a campaign in which they are targeting another league title. The Gunners are attempting to retain the Premier League crown and build on last season’s success.
Arteta has strengthened his squad during the summer transfer window, with the club bringing in players including Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis. Gunners also recently completed the signing of England defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in a deal reportedly worth £55 million including add-ons.
The Gunners had already defeated Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield before the Premier League opener, with Riccardo Calafiori, Havertz and Odegaard finding the net in that victory.
Their successive 3-0 victories underline the strong start Arsenal have made under Arteta and will increase expectations around their title defence.
For Coventry, the focus now turns to their next Premier League fixture and the need to respond quickly after a difficult opening night.
Gunners, meanwhile, will take confidence from the result as they begin their long campaign with three points, three goals and a clean sheet.
The convincing victory puts Arteta’s team in an early position of strength and gives the reigning champions the perfect platform from which to launch their bid for another Premier League title.
