Tension has gripped the political community in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State following the reported death of Chisimdiri Emmanuel Ngwu, chairman of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in the area.
Ngwu, a native of Orba in Udenu, was reportedly found lifeless outside his family compound after leaving the house earlier that morning. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, while reports of arrests in connection with the incident have heightened calls for a thorough investigation.
A family source told News Express that Ngwu woke up, walked out of the house and never returned. “He woke up early in the morning and walked out and that was the last we heard of him,” the source said.
According to the source, family members became concerned when they realized Ngwu was missing. His body was later discovered outside the compound.
“When we woke up, we didn’t see him only to discover his lifeless body in front of our compound. We saw scratches on his neck which was twisted backwards,” the source said.
The family source alleged that Ngwu had been strangulated. However, that claim could not be independently verified, and the precise cause of death had not been established at the time of reporting.
The circumstances in which his body was found have nevertheless raised questions over what happened between the time he left the house and when he was discovered dead.
Ngwu was not a newcomer to the ADC or electoral politics in Udenu. Available election records show that he contested the Udenu State Constituency seat in the 2019 Enugu State House of Assembly election on the ADC platform.

He polled eight votes in the election, which was won by the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Ikechukwu Ezeugwu.
Ngwu again contested the Udenu constituency seat under the ADC in the 2023 state assembly election, when he recorded 21 votes.
By March 2026, he was serving as the ADC chairman in Udenu. He was identified in reports from a party gathering in the area attended by political stakeholders and aspirants seeking the ADC ticket for the Udenu/Igboeze North Federal Constituency.
The gathering was part of the party’s efforts to strengthen its presence in the constituency ahead of the 2027 elections, with party stakeholders discussing grassroots mobilisation and the need to present a united front.
Ngwu’s death consequently comes at a politically significant period for the ADC in Udenu, where the party is seeking to expand its grassroots structure ahead of the next general elections.
For now, key questions surrounding Ngwu’s death remain unanswered, including what happened after he left home, how he sustained the reported injuries and who was responsible for his death, if criminal involvement is established.
A definitive account of the incident will depend on findings from the ongoing investigation and any medical or forensic examination conducted to determine the cause and manner of Ngwu’s death.
Members of the ADC and residents of Udenu are now awaiting clarification from the authorities as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death are expected to continue.
