A kidney-trade allegation raised by social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan or VDM, around the Mararaba-Nyanya axis has drawn a denial from the FCT Police Command.

The allegation followed the case of a man identified as Ezekiel Samuel, who reportedly approached VeryDarkMan on August 18 after discovering that his left kidney was missing, prompting further inquiries into allegations that young men and women in the area were selling their kidneys for money.

But the FCT Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, has denied any report with the report contrary to social media reports alleging that the police had confirmed kidney sales among young residents of Nyanya that the command had neither received nor confirmed any report of such activity.

The activist said he accompanied Samuel for medical examinations, including scans at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja and further checks at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, which he said indicated that Samuel’s left kidney was absent.

The reports were subsequently taken to the police, where Samuel narrated his account of how he allegedly came to lose the organ.

He claimed that Samuel told the police that a friend had lured him to a hospital, where his kidney was allegedly removed.

VDM said the police subsequently moved to arrest the friend in the Auta Balefi area, beyond the Masaka axis, where the authorities discovered that the friend was also missing one of his kidneys.

The activist further claimed that information gathered during the investigation indicated that Samuel’s friend had knowingly sold his kidney for N7 million.

He also alleged that information gathered during his intervention suggested that several other people living around the area may have lost one of their kidneys.

He, however, did not disclose the name of the hospital where the alleged kidney removals took place, citing the ongoing investigation.

The allegations generated concern on social media, with some reports subsequently suggesting that the police had confirmed that young people in Nyanya axis were selling their kidneys for money.

Adeh said no statement or communication confirming the alleged kidney sales had emanated from the command.

“The Police Command in the FCT wishes to categorically state that it has neither received nor confirmed any report of such nature. No statement or communication to that effect has emanated from the command,” she said.

She urged members of the public to disregard the publication and refrain from sharing unverified claims capable of creating unnecessary fear, panic and apprehension within the FCT.

The police spokesperson also urged residents who have credible information about suspected human organ trafficking or any other security concern to report it promptly to the authorities.

Adeh advised members of the public to approach the nearest police station or contact the FCT Police Command directly on 07038979348 or 08028940883.

The command did not state that it had opened an investigation specifically into alleged kidney sales in Nyanya, nor did it identify any individual, hospital or organization as being involved in organ trafficking
