A London coroner has ruled that a penile filler procedure performed on British-Nigerian businessman and influencer Igho “Tiny” Ubiribo in Thailand caused the pulmonary embolism that killed him in March.

The finding was delivered at an inquest at Inner West London Coroners’ Court on September 5, bringing new details to light months after his death and burial.

Ubiribo, 43, died in Bangkok on March 6 after receiving injections containing hyaluronic acid and lidocaine at an unnamed clinic during a holiday with his wife, fashion designer and socialite Danielle Simba Allen.

His death had already been followed by a lavish London funeral in May, but the detailed circumstances surrounding it have only now emerged publicly through the coroner’s proceedings.

According to evidence presented at the inquest, about 40 millilitres of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine were injected into Ubiribo’s penis as part of the cosmetic enlargement procedure.

After the treatment, Ubiribo and Allen went for a massage. It was there that he began complaining of chest pain and subsequently lost consciousness twice.

He was taken by ambulance to Sukhumvit Hospital in Bangkok, where he was initially conscious and able to answer questions. Allen informed doctors that he had recently undergone the filler procedure.

Doctors suspected a pulmonary embolism, a potentially life-threatening blockage of blood flow in the lungs and recommended a CT scan. However, Ubiribo lost consciousness before the scan could be completed.

He was transferred to intensive care, where medical personnel performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation for more than 100 minutes. He died in the early hours of March 6.

A post-mortem examination conducted in the United Kingdom later found cellular material in Ubiribo’s lungs consistent with the hyaluronic acid used in the procedure.

Based on the evidence before the court, coroner Jean Harkin concluded that the cosmetic treatment had caused the pulmonary embolism that led to Ubiribo’s death.

Ubiribo, who was also known as Denisi or Ego, was a British-Nigerian businessman and social media personality with about 185,000 Instagram followers.

He was known for documenting an extravagant lifestyle online and was associated with prominent figures in Nigeria’s entertainment and social circles.

Reports following his death said he owned properties in Los Angeles and London and had married Allen in a lavish ceremony in Zimbabwe in 2022.

His relationship with the Nigerian entertainment scene was also reflected in the tributes that followed his death. Afrobeats star Davido, who was among those who attended his funeral, became emotional while paying tribute to his late friend.

Davido described Ubiribo as a man whose energy, laughter, courage and presence made it difficult to imagine him being spoken about in the past tense. “He was energy, he was movement, he was laughter, he was courage,” Davido said while remembering his friend.

Socialite and nightlife entrepreneur Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, also paid tribute to Ubiribo on social media.

“Rest easy brother @ego2222. Even in death, the lifestyle was kept 100 for you,” he wrote, adding that London had “stood still” for Tiny.

Cubana Chief Priest recalled their shared experiences and ended his tribute with a message to his late friend: “We lived bro, Good memories na water. RIP, Big Tiny please watch over us.”

Ubiribo was buried in London in May in an elaborate ceremony, with his body placed in a gold coffin as friends, family and prominent figures gathered to pay their final respects.
