The Kaduna State Government has approved the implementation of the December 2025 Federal Government-ASUU salary agreement for academic staff of Kaduna State University, KASU.

The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Abubakar Sambo, at a press briefing in Kaduna said the new package would take effect from October 2026, following recommendations submitted by the nine-member KASU-ASUU negotiation committee after engagements between the government, university management and the academic union.

Sambo said the approved package includes the revised Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure, CONUASS, alongside other applicable salary adjustments and allowances.

According to him, the approval reflects Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to improving education, developing human capital and strengthening the welfare of academic staff across the state.

He said the government expected the improved welfare package to translate into stronger teaching, research, innovation and student outcomes at KASU.

Sambo also urged the university to pursue policies that would improve its academic standing and help it meet international standards.

The commissioner said the state government had allocated at least 25 per cent of its annual budget to education for three consecutive years.

He said the investment had supported the construction and renovation of 3,267 classrooms, while 1,194 toilets and 90 boreholes had also been provided across the state.

The government, he added, had supplied furniture for 57,777 learners and teachers, with additional education projects continuing across Kaduna’s 23 local government areas.

Sambo also disclosed that the state had approved a 50 per cent reduction in tertiary education fees to expand access to higher education and increase enrolment.

According to the commissioner, Kaduna has also recorded progress in its efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children. He said more than 300,000 children had returned to education through government interventions.

Sambo attributed part of the progress to Kaduna’s household mapping system, which is used to identify children who are out of school and determine appropriate interventions.

He said the approach had attracted national attention and was subsequently adopted by the Federal Government.

Sambo said the state had also graduated 4,050 young people through its structured vocational training programme.

He added that the Federal Ministry of Education had expressed interest in Kaduna’s training manuals, highlighting the state’s approach to skills development.

The commissioner further said Kaduna had made progress in conducting its annual school census and strengthening the use of data in education planning.

He disclosed that the Minister of Education had appointed him chairman of the Tertiary Education National Coverage Committee.

Sambo called on ASUU, SSANU, NASU and NAAT to reciprocate the government’s efforts by embracing dialogue and constructive engagement whenever disagreements arise.

He said improved staff welfare should lead to better performance across teaching, research, innovation and student development.

The commissioner also urged KASU management to develop strategies capable of improving the university’s position in global rankings and strengthening its competitiveness internationally.

He thanked KASU management, ASUU and other stakeholders for their patience and constructive participation during the salary negotiations.

The Vice Chancellor of KASU, Prof. Abdullahi Musa, described the salary approval as a landmark development for the university.

Musa said Governor Sani had demonstrated a strong commitment to addressing longstanding welfare concerns affecting workers at the institution.

He also commended the governor for allocating land to KASU academic staff for an affordable housing estate, describing the initiative as unprecedented.

The vice chancellor said the Kaduna State Government had provided hundreds of millions of naira to support the accreditation of KASU programmes.

According to him, all KASU programmes currently hold full accreditation from the National Universities Commission and relevant professional bodies.

Musa also acknowledged government support for laboratory chemicals and equipment, saying the investment had helped KASU establish what he described as a world-class central laboratory.

He added that the state government had cleared five months of salary arrears owed to academic staff, describing the move as another major intervention in improving workers’ welfare.

Musa said the latest developments demonstrate the administration’s commitment to strengthening education and creating better conditions for university workers and students.
