The Onigbesi of Igbesi-land in Isin Local Government Area of Kwara State, Oba Moses Oyinloye, has reportedly died days after regaining his freedom from kidnappers.
The monarch’s death was reported on Saturday, September 12, 2026, following his release from captivity after he was abducted from his palace.
Oba Oyinloye was kidnapped on Saturday, August 22, 2026, when armed men reportedly stormed his palace in Igbesi at about 11pm.
His abduction raised concerns among residents and traditional institutions over the security situation in parts of Kwara State, particularly the safety of traditional rulers and people living in rural communities.
Following the incident, the Kwara State Police Command announced the rescue of the monarch and two other victims.
Reports indicated that Oba Oyinloye spent several days in captivity before regaining his freedom, with one account stating that he was held for five days before his rescue.
His release brought relief to his family, subjects and members of the wider Igbesi community, who had been anxiously awaiting news about his safety.

However, days after his release, the traditional ruler reportedly died in a hospital. The development has triggered sadness and concern within the Igbesi community, particularly because of the circumstances surrounding his abduction and subsequent release.
The monarch’s death also comes amid continued concerns over kidnapping and insecurity in several communities across Nigeria.
As of the time of filing this report, the exact date and time of Oba Oyinloye’s death, the hospital where he died and the cause of his death had not been independently established.
It is also unclear whether his death had any connection with the ordeal he experienced during his captivity.
There was no confirmed statement available from the monarch’s family, the Igbesi community or the Kwara State Government providing details on the circumstances surrounding his death.
The cause of death should therefore not be attributed to the kidnapping or his time in captivity without an official confirmation from the family or relevant authorities.
The death of the Onigbesi of Igbesi-land is expected to generate reactions from traditional institutions, government officials and residents of the community.
Further details are expected as the monarch’s family and relevant authorities issue official statements on the development.
