Erling Haaland scores the only goal as Manchester City secure a dramatic 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, overcoming a first-half red card to Phil Foden.

The 199th Manchester derby turns into a tense encounter after City are reduced to 10 men for more than an hour. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Enzo Maresca’s side remain organised and eventually find the breakthrough through Haaland.

City’s difficult afternoon begins in the 22nd minute when Phil Foden receives a red card after an incident involving Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes. The dismissal gives United a significant numerical advantage for the remainder of the contest.

United struggle to make the extra man count, however, as City’s defence holds firm and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma produces a series of important interventions.

The hosts come close to taking the lead, with Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo both seeing efforts hit the woodwork. United are unable to convert their opportunities as City continue to defend with discipline.

The decisive moment arrives in the 60th minute. Josko Gvardiol sends the ball into the area and Haaland finishes to put City ahead.

The goal initially faces an offside check, but VAR overturns the decision. The review determines that United defender Patrick Dorgu plays Haaland onside, while Enzo Fernández’s position does not constitute interference with play.

Haaland’s goal proves decisive as City withstand sustained pressure from United during the closing stages. Donnarumma makes another crucial save late in the match, denying United an equalizer and helping City preserve their advantage until the final whistle.

The victory gives City a perfect start to the Premier League campaign, with the club moving to 12 points from four matches. United, meanwhile, remain on four points after four games and sit 13th in the early standings.

For Haaland, the strike marks his ninth goal in Manchester derbies in the Premier League era, further strengthening his record in the fixture.

The result also gives Maresca a significant victory in his first Manchester derby as City manager, while United are left to reflect on a missed opportunity after playing against 10 men for most of the match.

Despite having the numerical advantage for more than an hour, United manage only limited clear opportunities and cannot break down a City side that shows considerable defensive resilience.

City therefore leave Old Trafford with all three points from a dramatic derby, while United face renewed questions over their ability to turn possession and numerical advantages into goals.
