The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Police Command has arrested 70 suspects following a coordinated raid on identified criminal flashpoints around Unity Fountain and its environs in Maitama, Abuja.
The operation was launched after a video alleging a robbery in the area went viral, prompting the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, to order an immediate and comprehensive sweep of suspected black spots around the popular location.
According to the command, operatives of the Maitama Division carried out coordinated raids across the identified locations, arresting 70 persons during the operation.
Following preliminary screening and due process, 30 of those arrested were released, while 40 others were retained in custody for further investigation, the police said.
The development followed public attention generated by a viral video showing an alleged robbery involving a victim around Unity Fountain.
The footage prompted the police command to intensify efforts to identify those allegedly involved in the incident and investigate criminal activities reported around the area.

FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the victim was subsequently invited to assist with the investigation and positively identified two of the suspects as persons he recognized from the incident.
“The identified suspects, alongside other persons retained in custody, are currently in custody, while investigations are being expanded to identify and apprehend any other person or persons who may be connected to the offence,” Adeh said.
The police said the investigation remains ongoing, with detectives working to establish the identities and possible roles of other individuals who may have been connected to the alleged robbery.
The command has not disclosed the identities of the two suspects identified by the victim or provided further details on the alleged robbery, including the items reportedly taken or the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The police action also comes amid concerns over criminal activities around public spaces in the Federal Capital Territory, with the command maintaining that coordinated operations at identified criminal flashpoints are aimed at preventing offences and apprehending persons linked to reported crimes.
The FCT Police Command urged residents to remain security-conscious and promptly report suspicious persons, movements or activities to the nearest police station.
