The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has scheduled a six-hour power outage in parts of Abuja on Wednesday, September 23, to enable engineers carry out preventive maintenance on a 100MVA transformer at the Central Area transmission substation.
The exercise is scheduled to run from 10:00am to 4:00pm at the Central Area GIS 132/33kV Transmission Substation, where TCN’s maintenance crew will conduct routine checks on the transformer and its associated switchgear.
According to TCN, the maintenance is part of its preventive maintenance programme aimed at inspecting transmission equipment and supporting the reliability of the electricity network.
The planned work will affect electricity supply to several high-density and commercial areas of the Federal Capital Territory.
During the six-hour window, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, will be unable to receive bulk power from the affected substation for onward distribution to customers in Wuse Zones 1–7, the Sheraton Hotel area, the Central Business District, Utako, Jabi and surrounding areas.

TCN said its engineers would carry out the checks on the 100MVA transformer and associated switchgear as part of efforts to identify and address potential equipment issues before they develop into faults that could cause unplanned outages.
The latest planned interruption follows other maintenance activities carried out by TCN around Abuja in September.
On September 22, the company scheduled maintenance at its Kukwaba 132/33kV Transmission Substation to replace a faulty circuit breaker connected to a 60MVA transformer, affecting customers in Idu, parts of Life Camp and other areas.
TCN has also reported recent maintenance and restoration work involving 100MVA transformers at its Abuja substations, including the Apo transmission substation, highlighting the continued need for inspection and maintenance of critical transmission infrastructure in the capital.
The transmission company apologized to electricity consumers in the affected areas for the inconvenience caused by the planned outage and said the exercise forms part of its ongoing efforts to maintain the reliability of the national transmission network.
Power supply to the affected areas is expected to resume after the scheduled maintenance is completed and the relevant equipment is returned to service.
