The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has expanded its emergency rescue network with more than 170 ambulances and 60 Zebra points across Nigeria.
The Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Osondu Ohaeri, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja while responding to questions on the corps’ emergency ambulance network and response to road traffic crashes.
Ohaeri said the FRSC had the largest number of ambulances among emergency response agencies in Nigeria.
He, however, clarified that the figure did not represent the number of ambulances currently operational or serviceable nationwide as of September 2026.
He said an accurate figure for serviceable ambulances would require the latest fleet-status report from the corps’ medical and rescue office.
He said the more than 170 ambulances represented the scale of the FRSC emergency response network, while the deployment and availability of individual vehicles depended on their location, condition and assignment.
Ohaeri said the corps continued to maintain and deploy its emergency response assets, adding that the operational status of individual ambulances could vary.
He said the FRSC had historically recorded an average emergency response time of about 15 minutes under its documented emergency-response programme.

He cautioned against presenting the 15-minute figure as the current nationwide average without updated operational data.
The FRSC spokesman said response times varied depending on the location of a crash, traffic congestion, distance from the nearest ambulance point and accessibility of the crash scene.
He added that the accuracy and timeliness of information provided by callers could also affect how quickly rescue teams reached crash locations.
Other factors, he said, included situations where emergency teams were responding to other incidents at the same time.
Ohaeri said the corps had identified faster response to road traffic crashes and other emergencies as one of its management priorities in 2026.
He said the FRSC was strengthening rescue deployment and collaboration with other relevant agencies to improve emergency response to road crashes.
The CPEO said the corps remained committed to improving emergency rescue operations, strengthening the deployment of its resources and working with relevant stakeholders to achieve better outcomes for road crash victims.
He also urged members of the public to channel complaints concerning emergency response, evacuation, treatment of victims or alleged misconduct through the appropriate authorities for investigation and necessary action.
Ohaeri assured that the corps would continue to strengthen its emergency response mechanisms as part of efforts to reduce the consequences of road traffic crashes and improve road safety nationwide.
