NGX market value drops N812bn in one week

Trading activity also declines as investors exchange 3.17bn shares in four sessions

The Nigerian Exchange Ltd., NGX, All-Share Index fell by 0.52 per cent to close the week at 250,808.27 points, while market capitalization declined by 0.50 per cent to N162.843 trillion.

The decline resulted in a loss of N812 billion in market value, as investors traded 3.166 billion shares worth N155.023 billion in 206,662 deals during the four-day trading week.

The latest figures were lower than the previous week’s close of 252,113.41 points and N163.655 trillion in market capitalization.

The market opened for four trading days after the Federal Government declared Thursday a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s Independence Day.

All other indices closed lower, except the NGX Main Board, NGX Insurance, NGX Oil & Gas and NGX Growth indices, which gained 0.08 per cent, 0.61 per cent, 0.05 per cent and 1.85 per cent, respectively.

Trading activity also declined compared with the previous week, when 4.689 billion shares valued at N240.824 billion were exchanged in 261,198 deals.

The Financial Services Industry led the activity chart with 1.944 billion shares valued at N77.733 billion traded in 92,035 deals. The sector accounted for 61.41 per cent of total equity turnover volume and 50.14 per cent of turnover value.

The Investment Industry followed with 409.484 million shares worth N5.400 billion traded in 1,444 deals, while the ICT Industry ranked third with 231.705 million shares valued at N9.606 billion in 24,133 transactions.

Trading in the top three equities — Fidelity Bank Plc, VFD Group Plc and Access Holdings Plc — accounted for 1.343 billion shares worth N27.580 billion in 15,771 deals.

The three equities contributed 42.42 per cent and 17.79 per cent to total equity turnover volume and value, respectively.

A total of 44 equities appreciated during the week, down from 61 in the previous week, while 37 equities declined, compared with 32 previously.

Sixty-five equities remained unchanged, compared with 63 in the previous week. Sovereign Trust, eTranzact, Learn Africa, PZ Cussons and Fortis Global Insurance recorded the largest price declines, falling by 30k, N1.50, 95k, N7.40 and 19k, respectively.

ABC Transport, Critical Minerals Financing Corp, Livingtrust Mortgage Bank, VFD Group and Computer Warehouse Group emerged as the top gainers, rising by N2.30, N1.23, 85k, N2.30 and N2.75, respectively.

The NGX also notified trading licence holders and the investing public that an additional 3.21 billion ordinary shares of 50k each belonging to Guinea Insurance Plc were listed on its Daily Official List on Monday, Sept. 28.

Similarly, an additional 3.68 billion ordinary shares of 50k each of Regency Alliance Insurance Plc were listed on the Daily Official List on Monday.

New and supplementary units of Federal Government bonds issued in September were also listed on the NGX on Tuesday, Sept. 29.

In addition, 1.11 billion ordinary shares of 50k each of The Initiates Plc were listed on the Daily Official List on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
