At least five persons were killed in an accident on Saturday after a diesel-laden tanker lost control and crushed four Nissan Micra commercial vehicles on the Iwo Road–Ojoo Expressway in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The accident occurred at Aduloju Bus Stop, opposite Dominion City, and left the vehicles badly mangled.

An unregistered vehicle was also reported to be involved in the fatal crash.

According to preliminary findings by the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority, OYRTMA, the tanker driver lost control of the vehicle while speeding.

The Oyo State Sector Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Kehinde Dahunsi, also attributed the accident to brake failure suffered by the tanker.

‘’The trailer actually failed brake and went and crushed the commercial vehicles popularly called Micra that was carrying passengers and five people died on the spot. Those passengers were nine in number.’’

He also confirmed the number of fatalities, “Two males and three females died on the spot. We were able to rescue the remaining passengers. The corpses are with the police,” he said.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, saying some people rushed to rescue passengers trapped in the wreckage before the arrival of emergency responders.

One eyewitness, Sukurat Babajide, recounted how one of the vehicles involved in the crash had overtaken the commercial vehicle in which she was travelling shortly before the incident.

She said the accident occurred less than five minutes after the vehicle passed them.

Officials of OYRTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps and the police were deployed to the scene to coordinate rescue operations, maintain order and manage traffic.

Emergency responders also worked to clear the wreckage and prevent further danger to road users while motorists plying the Iwo Road–Ojoo axis were advised to exercise caution and observe speed limits.
